This 3 year-old Yorkshire Terrier, named Lucy has just been names the world’s smallest working dog in the world according to The Guinness Book of World Records. Lucy stole the title away from a recue dog in Japan that is 6 pounds. Lucy lives in Absecon and works as a therapy dog, through the Leashes of Love Program that is based in Cherry Hill, NJ. This tiny dog makes her weekly rounds visiting nursing homes, rehabilitation centers and hospitals. She also takes time to work with troubled youth and children with disabilities. The Facts of Dog Rescue in NJ

Volunteers are the unsung heroes of dog rescue. They put thousands of miles on their cars and vans transporting dogs, spend a lot of money that they are sometimes reimbursed for, but more likely are not, lose their hearts on a regular basis to abused, sick, or injured dogs, senior dogs, puppies, three-legged, blind and deaf dogs: dogs that were it not for these human guardian angels, would be euthanize unnecessarily or simply thrown away like garbage. Every single one of these volunteers chooses to rescue. Some volunteers make a deliberate choice to get involved. Still others adopt a dog from a NJ rescue group and before they realize what’s happened, they are spearheading the adoption activity in their community in New Jersey. Here are a few reasons why you might want to think about volunteering. Just to hold nothing back, I’ll include one very important reason why you shouldn’t volunteer. If you’ve never had a dog, volunteering can be a rewarding way to learn about lots of different dogs or about one specific breed. Think you might want to learn about German Shepherds? Look for a German Shepherd rescue group in your area. What about Dobermans, Pitt Bull Terriers, [...]

Dog Adoptions 101 in NJ

We’ve all seen stray dogs roaming the street in NJ looking scared, hungry, and frazzled. It breaks your heart. It always makes me wonder how they ended up like that in the first place. Some slightly luckier strays might end up in NJ shelters or getting rescued by a compassionate person. Not all dogs end up in NJ shelters because they were necessarily bad or had behavioral problems. A lot of them end up in NJ shelters because people buy dogs without considering the effort and expense of having a dog. Some end up there because the owner passes away or goes into a nursing home. Some are also either given up or simply dropped off because of divorces and neither person wants or can take care of the dog by themselves. But then there are many dogs who end up discarded because they were used by breeders or puppy mills as sort of breeding machines, then when they no longer serve that purpose they are given up. NJ rescue dogs that have been neglected or abandoned need training and a gentle hand to be a good member of your household. However, they will most likely need less training than [...]

Animal Shelter in Bloomfield, NJ Needs Help!

The John A. Bukowski Animal Shelter, which is located in Bloomfield, NJ is having a difficult time trying to keep it’s doors open. The shelter, which has been around for over 40 years, is run by the town of Bloomfield and their animal control serves both Bloomfield and Caldwell. The budget for the animal shelter is being drastically cut, which may result in the shelter being shut down. Apparently the shelter has been a topic of conversation for years within the township because the Glendale Cemetery is right next to the shelter and they have wanted to property for a while now so they can expand. If the shelter were to close all the strays and homeless animals would be brought to the Associated Humane, which is located in Newark. This shelter is already overwhelmed with animals and if pets don’t get adopted right away they can be put down within 7 days by law. In order to prevent this from happening the shelter is asking for donations for help, you can visit their facebook page to read more and find out how you can help through donations!
