How Long is the Gestation Period for Dogs
As a dog owner one of the most important things we should know about our dogs is their health. It is very important to learn when your female dog begins to go into heat and what you can do to help her through the process. The first thing you need to know is that your dog will go into heat twice a year which will last usually about 3 weeks. But what happens while she is in her heat cycle and she breeds with a male dog? If you have an idea that your dog could be pregnant the smart thing to do would be to take her to your local veterinarian to find out. Gestation is the period when the young are developing in the mother’s uterus. In dogs, this period usually lasts about 9 weeks ( 63 days). However, the puppies could be delivered between 58 and 68 days. I understand that this process may be hard on some dog owners, but here is some information about a dog’s pregnancy and what you should know: 1. Diagnosis There are no blood or urine tests available to confirm whether your dog is pregnant. The earliest time of diagnosis may be about [...]

NJ Shiba Inu Excited Over Big Football Game
Being that I am a big NY Giants fan I of course was watching the game last night. I was in my bedroom watching the game anticipating the moves that the players would make, in the hopes that the Giants would win the game. I had Champ sitting on the bed with me, occasionally looking up at the television, curious as to what was going on. The entire game was so exciting to watch, especially during overtime. As I am jumping up and down in excitement, Champ is looking at me with what looks like a smile on his face. He sat with me during the entire overtime and was either watching the television or my reactions to what was going on during the game. When the Giants finally won, I quickly jumped off the bed to jump up and down, while doing that Champ jumped off and was pawing at my legs, wanting me to pet him. He seemed to be just as excited as I was, now that may be because I was petting his head. I just wanted to share my excitement and joy that I felt after the Giants won and to share how my dog Champ likes to [...]

When someone thinks of Fashion Week in New York they think of all the glitz and glamour, you normally do not think of dogs. These beautiful pooches will strut their stuff and wag their tails for a new fashion line, New Yorkie pet apparel. This isn’t your normal fashion show introducing the latest trends for women and men, but it is dedicated to clothing for man’s/women’s best friend. Do Dogs Have Built In Snow Shoes in Their Paws in NJ
Now that Winter is here many of us pet owners worry about our dogs in regards to taking them outside. Will they be warm enough with just their fur or should I buy them a sweater to wear? Should I get them boots to protect their paws or will they be okay without them? Do I have to rush my dog to do his business so he doesn’t freeze outside? We have many questions when it comes to taking care of our dogs during winter time. Some of them we can easily answer and others are more thought provoking. When it comes to dogs walking out in the snow, research has shown that the snow and ice does not seem to bother the dogs paws. Their paws have an intricate heat transfer system built in that will immediately warm cold blood. Now combine that with the freeze resistant connective tissue and fat that is located in the pads of the paws and a dogs paw rivals that of a penguins wing for the ability to stay warm in the cold. Some researchers have studied the legs and paws of dogs and have discovered that a network of veins help to quickly circulate [...]

How Many Dogs is too Many in NJ?
Being a dog owner, I have always enjoyed spending time with my Shiba’s. They are my pride and joy and I don’t know what I would do without them. I plan to own more Shiba’s in the future, but is the state allowed to tell me how many dogs I can own? If you take care of your dogs and they treat people with respect, do you think it is fair for towns to limit the number of dogs a person owns? The residents in Mendham Township, NJ are extremely upset over the possibility of a new rule that limits the number of dogs one person can own. This new ruling seems to be geared towards a specific member of the town who owns 12 Rottweilers. This Mendham resident raises Rottweilers to show them competitively and keeps 12 of them on his property which is about three-acres. He does not sell them and states that his dogs have never gotten loose and have never bothered anyone. You go down the owners street and you wouldn’t even know he has dogs because the Rottweilers he has are not barkers. An animal control officer is he backing up the dog owner stating [...]
January is National Train Your Dog Month in NJ
The Association of Pet Dog Trainers, which is the largest professional association for dog trainers in the world, has declared the month of January “National Train Your Dog Month.” According to the Humane Society of the United States about six to eight million cats and dogs are turned into animal shelters. Out of the six to eight million about four million are euthanized because the shelters are not able to find a home for all of the animals. Many dogs are turned into animal shelters because they do not cooperate with their owners, which is usually a behavior or training issue that could easily be resolved with the help of a professional trainer. According to Alyson, who is Certified Professional Dog Trainer, “A lot of dogs get returned especially when they hit adolescent age when they hit about a year and two to three years old just because a lot of people don’t realize that a lot of problems that crop up during that time are easily preventable or changeable with training.” This is when The Association of Pet Dog Trainers wants to come in and help. The APDT has well over 6,000 member trainers doing everything they can to [...]
The Crazy Things That Dogs Do in NJ
Have you ever thought about the crazy things that your dog does? I have often seen some of the interesting things my male Shiba has done, such as going after a skunk more than once. However, there has to be something even more crazier than a dog going after a skunk. I have found a few stories of some of the strangest and craziest things that dogs have done in NJ. 1. Rocks A pug names Harley takes the cake with this one. Harley consumed 100 rocks during his stay at a veterinary boarding facility. When he kept pooping rocks the owner knew that there had to be a problem. The owner took him to an emergency clinic which led to the discovery of these rocks clogging his pipes. Thankfully, Harley was able to pass the rocks without needing surgery. That is why it is always important to keep a pet emergency first-aid kit around. 2. Cassette Tape There is nothing like walking in the house and seeing broken shards of plastic on the floor. The owner, William, found some evidence of a tune that had gone horrible wrong. Rudy had managed somehow to eat a cassette tape, unfortunately the [...]
