When looking into getting a dog you have specific needs in mind as to what kind of dog you would like. Whether they are small, dark or light haired, if they bark a lot, will they protect the family? These are all very important things to know and learn about when it comes to the different types of dog breeds. It is especially important to know what kind of temperament the dog has and also if they are good with children. With there being so many options of dog breeds choosing the right one can be difficult. When it comes to searching for the right breed I have found a website that has the database with all the different dog breeds and way to search and find which one is right for you and your family. It is called Find the Best. It provides you with a question and answer section about the various breeds, such as what breed lives the longest? or which breed weights the least? or even what is the biggest dog breed? Once you feel that you have a basic grasp on the background information of the many dogs you can then take into the personal [...]

How Long is the Gestation Period for Dogs

As a dog owner one of the most important things we should know about our dogs is their health. It is very important to learn when your female dog begins to go into heat and what you can do to help her through the process. The first thing you need to know is that your dog will go into heat twice a year which will last usually about 3 weeks. But what happens while she is in her heat cycle and she breeds with a male dog? If you have an idea that your dog could be pregnant the smart thing to do would be to take her to your local veterinarian  to find out. Gestation is the period when the young are developing in the mother’s uterus. In dogs, this period usually lasts about 9 weeks ( 63 days). However, the puppies could be delivered between 58 and 68 days. I understand that this process may be hard on some dog owners, but here is some information about a dog’s pregnancy and what you should know: 1. Diagnosis There are no blood or urine tests available to confirm whether your dog is pregnant. The earliest time of diagnosis may be about [...]

Doggy Proofing Your NJ Home

Many of us when we first get a puppy do not realize that it is just like having a baby in the sense that we need to doggy proof the house, this way they do not get into anything such as chemicals or any kind of materials that could be harmful to them. But the question is how do I go about doing this? How do I find out what is safe and what is not safe for my dog? or what even goes into safety proofing my house for my dog? Here is a list of potential hazards to your dog: 1. House Cleaners – Items such as bleach, detergents, over cleaners, soap and many more. All of these have different levels of toxicity and may cause harm to your dog it touched or consumed. Keep all these cleaners in their bottles and make sure to store the bottles out of reach or in a locked cabinet. Keep in mind that some dogs are able to open normal cabinets. 2. Chemicals - Items include automotive fluids (especially antifreeze), fertilizers, moth balls, weed killers, and much more. These are very toxic to your dog. Make sure you keep all automotive and [...]

Do It Yourself Dog Toys for NJ Dog Owners

Do you get tired of spending an arm and a leg on dog toys that many times will last only a couple of days before your pooch just completely destroys them? I know I have the same issue with my dog Champ, I will buy his these stuffed squeaky toys and within a couple of days I am seeing the stuffing all over the floor and the squeaker part in his mouth. It got to the point where the only toys I was buying him were the ropes because I know it would take him forever to destroy those. I got to thinking that there had to be some toys out there that could be fun for my dog, but would also last at the same time. I found a few toys that could easily be made by the NJ dog owner with materials that could easily be found in the home. Here are a few of the toys that can be made at home that your pooch will love: 1. Fleece Braid Tug Toy These toys are very easy to make and you can use fleece, denim, or even an old t-shirt, but make sure whatever material you use [...]

How to Make Grooming Fun for You and Your Dog

As a dog owner we have certain responsibilities to help maintain our dogs health and one of them includes grooming them regularly. I know many dog owners and dogs who may feel this is a daunting task because neither one likes having to deal with it. Being the owner you may get frustrated because your dog is not cooperating with you and for the dog he/she notices your frustration and may become reluctant to being groomed. So what do you do now? How can you get your dog groomed without it being a negative experience for the both of you? Here are a few tips that may be helpful in properly grooming your dog, but having fun with it at the same time. 1. Brushing: Many dogs enjoy being brushed because they enjoy how it feels. This also helps to create a positive bond with your dog. It also gives you a chance to look over your dogs skin and coat. As the owner you should look for anything unusual such as lumps under the skin, sores, dull or flaky skin, rashes, and bald spots. If you do find anything unusual talk to your veterinarian about it as soon as you can. 2. Brushing [...]
